Here in Norwich, I’ve always taken a big practical interest in issues to do with food and disadvantage.
My Cabinet role at Norwich City Council includes responsibility for food poverty and security. I help run a free weekly community cafe called the Sunday Social which aims to reduce social and financial exclusion as well as reduce food waste by cooking with ingredients collected from supermarkets by Norwich FoodHub. One of my previous jobs was teaching people on low incomes and with mental health and addiction problems how to eat well on a limited budget.
Now I’m supporting a campaign which aims to cut Europe and the UK’s food waste in half. Disgracefully, there are about 55 million people in food poverty in Europe – but the food wasted throughout the continent could feed them over 9 times over.
